Why Great Riding Starts With Great Horsemanship (Not Just More Time in the Saddle)

Starting something new can feel exciting — but also a little intimidating. Whether it’s your very first time around horses or you’re thinking about trying polo for the first time, it’s completely normal to feel nervous before your first lesson.
At our yard, we meet so many riders who arrive feeling unsure, anxious, or worried they won’t be “good enough.” The truth is, every experienced rider started exactly the same way.
“What if I’ve never ridden before?”
One of the biggest worries people have is feeling inexperienced. Many assume everyone else already knows what they’re doing, but that’s simply not true. We teach riders of all levels — from complete beginners who have never touched a horse, to riders returning after years away from the saddle.
Our coaches guide you through every step at your own pace, from learning how to get on and off safely, to steering, balance, confidence, and eventually introducing polo skills if and when you’re ready.
There’s absolutely no pressure to rush.
“Polo looks intimidating.”
We hear this all the time! Polo can look fast, technical, and slightly overwhelming from the outside. But learning polo is a gradual process, and lessons are adapted to suit your confidence and ability.
Before focusing on swinging a mallet or game play, we make sure riders feel secure and comfortable on horseback first. We break everything down into manageable steps so you can enjoy the process and build confidence naturally.
Most riders are surprised by how welcoming and supportive the polo community really is.
We Offer Both English Riding & Polo Lessons
One of the things that makes our yard unique is that we offer both English riding lessons and polo lessons.
This means riders can comfortably transition into polo at their own speed, or simply continue developing confidence and riding skills through English riding alongside polo training.
For some people, starting with flatwork and general riding lessons helps build a strong foundation before introducing polo skills. Others enjoy combining both disciplines together.
There’s no “right” route — we support each rider individually and help create the best path for them.
Confidence Comes From the Right Horses
We’re incredibly lucky to have a wonderful team of polo ponies who are not only talented athletes, but also kind, forgiving, and confidence-building horses.
Many of our horses happily lend themselves to multiple disciplines and are fantastic teachers for nervous or beginner riders. A calm, experienced horse can make all the difference when learning something new, and we take great care in matching riders with suitable horses.
Our goal is always to help riders feel safe, supported, and encouraged in the saddle.
“What if I’m nervous?”
Honestly — that’s completely okay.
Nerves are normal, and our team understands that starting riding lessons can feel like a big step. Whether you’re worried about balance, control, confidence, or simply not knowing what to expect, we’ll guide you through it all with patience and support.
Some of our most confident riders today once arrived feeling exactly the same way.
More Than Just Riding
For many people, riding becomes more than just a sport. It becomes a place to switch off, build confidence, challenge yourself, and become part of a supportive community.
There’s something incredibly rewarding about stepping outside your comfort zone, building a partnership with a horse, and realising you’re capable of far more than you thought.
If you’ve been thinking about starting riding or polo lessons but feel nervous, take this as your sign to give it a try. You don’t need experience — just a willingness to start.
We’ll help with the rest 🐎
